The boundaries of touch: why choosing space over perfection is the ultimate act of authenticity
In September and October, our focus at LIVE / STYLE / SHIFT centres around a single, powerful concept: authenticity as the ultimate means to honour our personal needs and limits.
This conversation naturally ties into World Mental Health Day and the recent inauguration of our Virtual Space for Emotional Well-Being. That space remains open all year long as a quiet haven where you and anyone you care to invite can deepen self-knowledge, explore emotional needs, and honour personal boundaries.
As we continue this journey together, I want to gently nudge our conversation outward, toward the subtle, everyday interactions we have with service professionals like hairdressers, aestheticians, dentists, and shop assistants. People we see regularly, who often care for us, but whose physical proximity can sometimes leave us feeling strangely drained, exposed, or uncomfortable.
When professional care feels like personal discomfort
Have you ever felt a subtle knot or a void in your stomach right before dialling your dentist’s office? I certainly have. For years, despite their friendliness and undeniable professionalism, dentists made me feel slightly uneasy. It wasn’t just about the tools or the bright lights. It was deeper. Needing that kind of professional help always made me feel somewhat incomplete or broken, as if I were an object in need of a fix rather than a human being simply seeking care.
When I finally summoned the courage to get my dental appliance installed after years of hesitation, it was terrifying. Was it worth it? Absolutely. But the emotional hurdle was real, and it taught me an important lesson about how deeply we register physical intrusion.
It turns out that this instinct to protect our personal space and physical boundaries starts remarkably early. Recently, my little girl refused to let a professional hairdresser cut her hair. I warned her, "Mommy isn't very skilled with scissors. You might end up with a less-than-beautiful haircut!" Guess what? She chose her mom's uncertain, unskilled haircut over sitting in a professional's chair.
Her choice took me right back to the days of lockdown, when I started trimming my own hair out of necessity. What began as a practical solution quickly transformed into a newfound sense of quiet autonomy. Even when salons reopened, I found myself strangely reluctant to return. Yes, a professional haircut used to give me that lovely, crisp feeling of renewal, but it left me feeling drained on the inside.
Listening to the body’s whispers
The more I grow, the more I realize I simply don't enjoy having people so close to my face and body for routine beauty treatments.
Years ago, after a facial and eyebrow wax, an aesthetician bluntly suggested I shouldn't come back. At the time, I felt an immediate wave of rejection. Years later, looking back with detachment, I realize she was likely offering practical advice regarding my skin condition, couperose. But in that moment, the discomfort and tension had already set in, leading me down an emotional path rather than a logical one.
What I felt there became a turning point: I decided to stop putting myself in awkward, invasive situations where gossip, prejudice, unsolicited judgment, and forced small talk add nothing good to my life.
I see this pattern everywhere once I started paying attention:
An elegant lady I know meticulously does her own nails at home and almost refused a necessary podiatry check-up because the thought of being touched made her recoil.
Countless clients tell me they avoid professional pedicures or body treatments simply because they cannot stand having strangers so close to their physical body.
Our avoidance isn't a defect; it is a signal. It’s our nervous system setting a firm, healthy boundary.
Flexibility, connection, and redefining style without intrusion
While all of my Style Coaching™ services are designed to be available both in-person and online, my clients' genuine preferences have naturally shifted my work almost entirely into the digital realm. It is what women are asking for more and more.
In traditional styling environments or retail stores, you are often subjected to awkward fitting-room intrusions, well-meaning shop assistants hovering too close, or physical measuring tape pressed against your body.
Online Style Coaching™ strips all of that discomfort away while offering complete flexibility without compromising quality:
In full control of your space: With clear, step-by-step guidance, you take your own measurements and photos in the privacy and comfort of your own home, no unwanted physical contact required.
A natural, dynamic conversation: Rather than stiff, rigid weekly meetings that feel like a scheduled school program, our dialogue develops organically. We communicate through voice notes, emails, and spontaneous messaging.
Real-time support: If you're out shopping and want quick advice on an outfit for a specific occasion, I jump in right then and there, even if it wasn't part of a formal agenda.
This approach effortlessly fits into daily schedules and varying lifestyles. Clients leave home and go through life with clear ideas on what makes them look and feel incredible, but most importantly, they know why. And long after our official program structure wraps up, the warm, constructive and supportive conversation almost always continues.

Honouring your limits is an act of self-love
Choosing to trim your own hair, skip the beauty salon, or style your wardrobe through flexible digital guidance isn't about being anti-social. It’s about listening to what your body and mind need to feel safe, grounded, and respected.
True style and true well-being begin when you stop forcing yourself into situations that leave you feeling hollow, and start honouring the boundaries that keep you whole.
Over to you...
